Why we are different

SOMRAF organization is addressing the needs of marginalized people inside Somali communities which are social and economic exclusion, they considered the neediest group among Somalia people, they are at the bottom of the society, they are facing worst starvation, highest poverty rates, massive displacement, huge unemployment figures, highest illiteracy levels and horrific health and sanitation status.

Due the social and economic segregation their children are dropping out from School and they are facing isolation even United States . Their situation is exceptional which require special attention. They are considered double disadvantaged communities every where inside Somali and inside American Somali communities according to the following:

The Exceptional Situation Experienced by these marginalized communities:
1) Inside Somalia
• Human Rights Violations:
The level of human rights violations faced by the community is incomparable to any where else with regard to new socially set terminologies of dehumanization and victimization of the highest order devised by the dominant clans which was the source of widespread impunity. The terms “Looma oyaan” or un-mourned one”, “Looma aaran” un-avenged one and “Sacaboolay” simply meaning an armed.

• Humanitarian Crisis
On the humanitarian front the minorities have similarly endured the worst form of suffering within the Somali humanitarian catastrophe mainly through discrimination and lack of proper attention to their complex predicament that cannot be easily recognized outside the Somali homogeneous culture amid the unceasing violence whose greatest victims have been without doubt the minority clans.

2) Challenges inside United States :
Somali minority communities like other Somali new newcomers to the United States are oven faces obstacles and situations that affect their health and well being such as having come from war-torn country; post-traumatic stress disorder, discrimination within Somali society; culture shock; grieving losses of loved ones, hopes, dreams, and productivity; reversal of traditional roles; loss of status; intergenerational conflicts; work frustrations; and feelings of isolation. In addition, a number of factors often make it more difficult for newcomers to seek healthcare and/or navigate the healthcare system in the United States . These include limited English language skills; inadequate health education information; cultural concerns when seeking healthcare; and the inexperience of healthcare providers in interacting with people from widely diverse cultural backgrounds.
